After many years of supporting universities in Nigeria, the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation challenged a group of United States based Nigerian professionals to assist in enhancing the capacity of higher education institutions in Nigeria. We took on this challenge because we know that Nigerian institutions are essential in developing the next generation of leaders, sustaining a growing economy, as well as facilitating a just and vibrant social structure, and a stable society.
To accomplish our mission of promoting excellence in higher education in Nigeria, we are raising awareness about the role of Nigerian universities in the social, economic and political development of the nation, as well as introducing a broad base of organizations, donors and professionals to these institutions to foster dialogue and collaboration on training, research, program development, capital improvements, fundraising, as well as faculty and student exchange opportunities.
The NHEF currently works with various universities in different capacities but our initial focus is on supporting five of the top universities including: Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University, University of Ibadan, Univeristy of Port Harcourt and the University of Nigeria Nsukka. In this way, we have laid the ground work for continued success and hope to galvanize other institutions in this effort.
