MY EXPERIENCE THUS FAR AS PART OF THE NHEF CLASS OF 2017 SCHOLARS.
The first time I heard about the Nigeria Higher Education Foundation was in 2016. I was just entering my second year then and the school website had put up the advert for their annual essay competition. I was not eligible for the competition then as it was for students in their penultimate year. But from that moment, my dream had been to win the NHEF essay competition. When 2017 came around, I was already biding my time and waiting for the essay competition announcement. When it did come out, it led me to the NHEF official website which led me to the Scholars Program and I believe it’s safe to say that my life has hardly been the same since.
Whilst I did not win the essay competition, I ended up with something which I believe was eventually better – the experience and opportunity of being an NHEF Scholar. Right from the application process through the interviews and the orientation program to the internship, the NHEF Scholars Program has provided me with the opportunity for personal and professional growth /development. Every step of the way has involved constant learning and broadening of horizons and perspectives. From providing me with my first flight experience, to learning what networking means and sharing the same dinner table with some of the world’s leading business executives from Nigeria, the Scholars Program has been truly fulfilling. The internship which is at the heart of the program has also been a great source of learning and development. I have learnt so much about my future career prospects and what each entails as well as strengthened/developed relevant technical and soft skills to help me have a successful career.
Being a part of the NHEF Scholars Program is an experience that will stay with me for life and something I will always continue to be. The impact has been far reaching and quite impressionable on people around me as well. It has set a new and exciting course for my life and has left me feeling more confident in my ability to successfully navigate through the sea of life.
